The VMA’s are awarded to the best in the music video industry, with live performances and a variety of artists – upcoming and well known. They usually see the likes of Kayne West having showdowns with Taylor Swift and feuds between Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus. But, perhaps the biggest news for this year is the renaming of their moonman award, moon person has no set gender.
We thought it prudent to offer up some headlines to the pivotal point in the calendar, but before I begin the commentary…
So, whose nominated? I’ve picked my top 4 categories!
Artist of the year
Being a huge Ed Sheeran fan, I think we all know who I’d like to win (no bias at all, honest…) His come back from a year out was timed well, no one else was releasing albums and so he filled the void – perfectly! He deserves an award for sticking to his no social media rule!
Best New Artist
Julia Michaels has one of those voices you could listen to all day, I’d like to see her win this category and produce more music!
Kendrick Lamar – “HUMBLE.” (Cinematographer: Scott Cunningham)
Imagine Dragons – “Thunder” (Cinematographer: Matthew Wise)
Ed Sheeran – “Castle On The Hill” (Cinematographer: Steve Annis)
DJ Shadow ft. Run The Jewels – “Nobody Speak” (Cinematographer: David Procter)
Halsey – “Now Or Never” (Cinematographer: Kristof Brandl)
As much as I love Ed Sheeran and Imagine Dragons, unfortunately my personal favourite was Nobody Speak by DJ Shadow ft Run the Jewels. The lyrics appear to be sung by the politicians of opposing sides, its incredibly done when both the UK and USA had political battles ensuing.
Video of the year
Kendrick Lamar – “HUMBLE.”
Bruno Mars – “24K Magic”
Alessia Cara – “Scars To Your Beautiful”
DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller – “Wild Thoughts”
The Weeknd – “Reminder”
Alessia Cara’s video empowers those – both men and women, who don’t feel comfortable because of not fitting into the modern standards of beautiful. It is an outstandingly simple but beautifully done video.
Video Vanguard Award
On a final note, the Video Vanguard Award for 2017 will be received by Pink. The Video Vanguard Award is given to an artist to celebrate their contribution to pop culture and fashion as well as music. As an artist I’ve grown up with, blasting her music as loud as possible, she deserves it!
