TULSA
Tulsa is a collection of black-and-white photographs by Larry Clark of the life of young people in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Its publication in 1971 “caused a sensation within the photographic community”, leading to a new interest in autobiographical work. Larry later became better known for directing the movie Kids, Clark was a Tulsa native and a drug addict during the period (1963–1971) when he took the photographs, Its widely considered as a seminal book on documentary and portrait photography. I’ve just order this off amazon and looking forward to it’s arrival.
BRICE BISCHOFF
Brice Bischoff is an american born photographer. This is a series of images he shot in 2009 in the Bronson Cave’s. The Bronson Cave’s are only a short distance from Hollywood hence making them the perfect location for shooting unearthly shots on earth. The caves have been used as a location to shoot hundreds of films and dozens of TV series, The A-Team, Army of Darkness and Star Trek, have all been shot on location at the caves. They are pretty spooky and remind me of the TV series Land of the Giants. More on the caves here and more of Brice’s photography here.
WICKER & STEEL
Wicker & Steel is the title of the UK techno producer Perc’s first album. Perc has been active in London’s club scene for the better part of a decade, putting out records on top tier techno imprints like CLR and Drumcode. But the majority of his output, and especially his more artistically daring material, has come through his perc Trax label.
The album artwork designed by myself in the small hours of the morning, The final design is a strong Iconic reduction of the album title. The artwork was crafted on Birmingham city council library photocopies, paint rolled textures and masking tape. It was a welcome change to have a project with a generous lead time and no deadline pressure to explore new working methods and scratch a little deeper with research underpinning artwork. A full display typeface based on was also developed in tandem with the project to bolster the overall identity. Fingers crossed we will do a post with the type face in the near future.
ZINE OF DARKNESS
Lee Basford & Jonny Costello are exhibiting a zine and a book at the aptly titled zine fair in Berlin “I’ve Zine the Darkness” There isn’t a whole lot of information on the website about this as of yet but there are quite a few zines to look at which is always nice, see them HERE. And on a related but unrelated note the Birmingham zine fair is scheduled this year for july. More information on this can be found HERE.
