ROSE VILLA TAVERN

A new watering hole, just a stones throw from the studio has opened. The Rose Villa Tavern opened its newly refurbished doors last night. First impressions look good. It’s a Grade II listed building that was built in 1920′s, its richly ornamented with ceramic tiles and some super stained glass windows. Serious wow factor to accompany your beverage of choice. The above image is how it used to look, it was a bit of a no go zone to be honest.

Here is a review, and here is a link to the history of the Pub (really interesting in fact). Apparently they have a website coming soon too here.

CHARACTER TOTEM BIRMINGHAM

The Totems are coming home! Join Inkygoodness & friends in Birmingham for a very special Character Totem Home-Coming exhibition at the fantastic Zellig space on the 21st of July.

What is Character Totem you might ask…‘Character Totem’ is an inspiring and colourful walk-through installation of hand-painted customised totem poles, lovingly created by an evolving collective of artists from across the globe, a new twist on the traditional exquisite corpse game.

They have some top class illustrators involved on this and lots of local talent too Darren John, Murray Sommerville, Log Roper, Michelle Turton and the man of the moment Mc Bess all shaking a posca and getting involved. The night looks set to be special with some live art and music to keep your eyes and ears occupied. Event details are HERE, more inky goodness can be found HERE.

HOME OF METAL

Home of Metal Exhibition is a celebration of the music that was born in the Black Country and Birmingham, The Exhibition is on in the Gas Hall in Birmingham city centre and started on Saturday the 18th of June. It’s well worth a look, with original artifacts from, Judas Priest, Napalm Death, Ozzy and Black Sabbath. The exhibition also has a extensive collection of zines from the era and some amazing original artwork of logo’s, sleeve art and gig posters. Check out the full details HERE.
The image above is one of my all time favorite album covers, Judas Priest Screaming for Vengeance. Judas Priest originally from Birmingham have quite a few artifcats and artworks on show at the exhibition. Also of interest for the designs and visual thinkers “The Visual Language of Heavy Metal” is currently running in Wolverhampton. Details on this HERE.

HOLLYWOOD NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD…

Courtesy of Total Film, an amazing (hilarious) gallery of Hollywood film posters reworked by amateurs, showcasing their ‘interpretations’ of the film/poster (or in some cases perhaps just what the artist would have liked the film to be)! Spot the difference from the actual Krull poster on #36.

POINTE BLANK

Last night we visited a new design exhibition at the Birmingham Royal Ballet called Pointe Blank. – Pointe Blank is an exhibition of original images inspired by the story of Coppélia. In a first-of-its-kind project for Birmingham Royal Ballet, 27 artists and designers have been invited to produce individual pieces of artwork based upon toymaker Doctor Coppélius, and his attempts to breathe life into his most prized creation. The result was pretty impressive, well done to all involved you can view all the entries here
