UNCHARTED: THE LOST LEGACY MEDIA KIT
23rd August 2017 marked the (non-US) release of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy on PlayStation 4, from critically acclaimed developer, Naughty Dog. This was the first standalone adventure in the Uncharted series and with Nathan Drake now retired from the treasure hunting business, it finds Chloe Frazer enlisting the aid of renowned mercenary Nadine Ross. They must venture deep into the mountains of India to recover a fabled ancient Indian artefact, The Golden Tusk of Ganesh, and keep it out of the hands of a ruthless war profiteer to prevent the region from falling into chaos.
Utilising the size of the previous Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End media kits we produced, the aim was for this kit to work as part of a trilogy as well as be a unique standalone piece. UNDC’s kit had a gold colour palette and UC4’s navy blue with gold detail. For UTLL we again incorporated the gold, as a distressed gold foil, to create a cohesive thread through the 3 kits and convey the treasures inherent in the game, with the main colour being dark red – as seen in the title’s logo and Chloe’s headscarf in the PSX 2016 trailer. An array of tactile materials, premium print finishes and numbered editioning were utilised to further the kit’s aesthetic, exclusivity and drive social media coverage.
The UTLL kit was presented as a premium styled paper over board liftoff lid box – within a striking diecut printed card bellyband with deboss and mandala embossing detail, whilst the inner featured hidden imagery printed in Pantone gold. The bellyband allowed the 2103 editioning on the base of the box to be seen, but needed to be removed to reveal the recipient’s individual number – handwritten in gold pen, as well an optical pattern in a distressed gold foil.
With the card bellyband removed the box is fully revealed; the outer was wrapped in a tactile Winters Wicotex Dubletta Maroon fabric, giving it a distressed antique aesthetic – with hints of an old treasure box. The box lid featured a debossed area with inset printed card panel of a shrine wheel with distressed gold foiled Ganesh symbols – the navy blue of the background image linking back to the UC4 kit.
The lid of the box was removed to reveal a stylised duotone of the Chloe and Nadine keyart and localised game logo on the inner, printed on Peregrina Majestic Real Gold pearlescent paper – linking back to the UNDC media kit. In the base of the box was revealed the media kit content, the first item being an endorse folded 20 page newspaper.
The newspaper was localised to 9 languages, including an Arabic specific right to left reading version, printed on a 55gsm newspaper stock with brass staples. Folding out to a larger 322 x 636mm allowed us greater opportunity to showcase the game’s vast landscapes and storylines, whilst keeping the overall size matching that of the UNDC and UC4 kits. Utilising the Mayeka Demi Bold font of the game logo, key marketing information also featured – including exclusive insights from the Creative and Game Directors of Naughty Dog.
With the newspaper removed a card fitment was revealed in the base of the box, produced in a tactile maroon card to tie into the outer of the box, with subtle printed Indian pattern. The fitment featured a pocket for the review disc and distressed gold foil of the Naughty Dog logo. Behind the disc could be seen a dark red ribbon with gold PS Family logo, hinting at a further reveal. The disc was removed to reveal imagery of the Ganesh disc from the game, and a fitment underneath which held a replica of the Golden Tusk of Ganesh, the ribbon pull allowing for easier removal from the fitment. The Tusk was produced in antique brass for an aged/antique aesthetic, making each Tusk unique.
The final kit was dispatched to over 30 territories around the world ahead of the game’s retail release with great feedback, resulting in a multitude of YouTube unboxings and online/offline media coverage.
